Narrated by Sir Jameson Glenlivet. From Wikipedia: The Red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta), or simply RIFA, is one of over 280 species in the widespread genus Solenopsis. Although the red imported fire ant is native to South America, it has become a pest in the southern United States, Australia, Taiwan, Philippines, and the southern Chinese province of Guangdong. There are also reports of ant hills in Macau, the former Portuguese enclave that borders the province of Guangdong. RIFA are known to have a strong, painful, and persistent irritating sting that often leaves a pustule on the skin.[1] In the 1930s, colonies were accidentally introduced into the United States through the seaport of Mobile, Alabama.[2] Cargo ships from Brazil docking at Mobile unloaded goods infested with the ants. They have since spread from Alabama to almost every state of the American South, from Texas to Maryland. Since the 1990s, infestations have been reported in California in the West and New Mexico in the Southwest, but probably via ship or truck (not overland) in the case of California.[1] In a similar way, the ants were accidentally introduced into Australia in 2001.[3] RIFA are more aggressive than most native ant species and have a painful sting. A person typically encounters them by inadvertently stepping into one of their mounds, which causes the ants to swarm up the person’s legs, attacking en masse. The ants respond to pheromones that are released by the first ant to attack …
Antz Ants Formiche Ameise Formica is a genus of ants. It is the type genus of the family Formicidae and the subfamily Formicinae, and in turn Formica’s own type species is the European red wood ant Formica rufa. Common names for this group are wood ant, mound ant, and field ant. Many of the better known forest species have common names that include the words “wood ant”, although F.rufa is also known as the “horse ant”. (However in German, the equivalent term Rossameise refers to the carpenter ants of the genus Camponotus.) As the name wood ant implies, many Formica species live in wooded areas where there exists no shortage of material with which they can thatch their mounds. The most shade tolerant species are F. lugubris in Eurasia and F. subaenescens (fusca) in North America. However, sunlight is important to most Formica species, and colonies rarely survive for any considerable period in deeply shaded, dense woodland. The majority of species, especially outside the rufa species group, are inhabitants of more open woodlands or treeless grassland or shrubland. In North America, at least, these habitats had a long history of frequent landscape-scale fires that kept them open before European settlement. Conversion to agriculture and fire suppression have reduced the abundance of most American Formica, while the cessation of traditional haycutting seems to have had the same effect in Europe. However, at least a few Formica species may be found in a wide range of habitats …
Unlike most ant queens, these ‘Raptiformica’ queens have a dark, sinister method to founding their colony. They don’t simply dig a hole into the ground and raise their first workers alone from scratch. Once leaving the nest and mating, F. sanguinea queens fan out in search for their Serviformica hosts, and if all is timed properly, the F. sanguinea queens will steal the unhatched pupae from other species, but not to eat them–they intend to forge their own colony through the enslavement of their encaptured Serviformica pupae who will hatch convinced that the F. sanguinea queens are their original mothers. The F. sanguinea queens will also attempt to kill the resident Serviformica host queen (In this case, potentially the F. fusca queen) to steal her identity–and her …
