Can german cockroaches live in potting soil outside in winter?
A few months ago (4-5) I saw a total of two cockroaches in my apartment over the course of a month or so. I put out bait traps and also had an exterminator come, who put gel bait in the key areas. I haven’t seen a single roach (or any evidence of roaches) after that, until tonight, when I found a female roach with an egg sac crawling on my wall. I trapped and killed it and flushed it down the toilet along with the sac. However, it was not very close to my kitchen where I had the original roach problem. It was crawling along the wall beside my balcony doors, which makes me wonder if it came in from outside? I think I would have seen it if it crawled over from the kitchen as I was sitting on the couch watching TV the whole time. There is a small hole in my wall near where the roach was seen that leads to the outside (it’s there for the cable wire.) Directly next to this hole on my balcony is a bag of potting soil that’s probably warmer than the rest of outside (which is below freezing at the moment.) Is it possible the roach came from there? I will call the exterminators tomorrow but right now I am trying to ease my mind a bit. I don’t really understand why it was so far from the kitchen if I haven’t seen any other roaches to indicate an overpopulation problem. Any ideas?
I forgot to mention that I do get bugs in here from time to time trying to escape the cold, even now— in fact my cat just caught one of those stink bugs which really freaked me out because I thought it was another roach at first! But no, just a stink bug. I guess it came in from somewhere because I haven’t seen any of those in my apartment for several weeks.

It’s possible, since potting soil would provide a relatively warm haven, but they would have to find some sort of food in that time.
