buy a house with a dirt basement?

My husband and I are looking into buying our first house. We ran across a listing for a house that looks perfect, except it mentioned that it had a “partial dirt floor basement.” Could someone tell me what this means, and if it should be a red flag? What problems might we encounter if we buy a house with a dirt floor basement? Bugs? Mice? Flooding? Mold? (My family is very susceptible to allergies.)

Thanks!

well a dirt basement means you have a basement that the floor is dirt its just like the Earth floor. i would have a regulure basement. THERE WILL BE BUGS AND MICE!

Many houses have dirt floor basements – it’s considered an “unfinished” basement.

If the soil gets damp during the rainy or snow-melt season, it might smell funny (like wet dirt) and it could support the growth of fungi and mold.

It might not be that expensive to pour a floor, so you might investigate that before deciding on how much of an offer to make.

ok.. what this is as under the house it has been dug out to make a basement. however they never poured the concrete . if you bought the house .. you could do some block work and put a concrete floor in what there calling a dirt basement and add valve to the house . As the living space would increase . Go look at the home and take a person or contractor who does concrete work. they could live you a idea of what it would cost to finish out the basement in to living space . then ask the restate agent what would the house be worth with the added living space? see if the increased valve would be worth finishing out the basement space . you never know you make a a Diamond in the ruff that just needs a little work .

You won’t encounter any problems different than if it was a full basement. A flood is a flood, dirt or not.

i have seen very dry dirt floors and very wet concrete floors…the advantage of concrete is you can clean it…bugs and mice wont care if its concrete or not…it will be up to you to keep them out…the concrete may help with mold but no guarantee…mine was dirt, now its concrete, no different than if they poured it when it was built…
