Recently we decided to do a little home renovation, nothing much, we put new carpet in one room and installed a vanity table in another. Nothing too drastic or anything. Anyway, all of a sudden we began seeing TONS of carpenter ants. Everywhere I look I see one scurrying away, and hurry to squish it (because it seems to be the only way the kill them). Anyway, I was wondering if there’s a non-expensive way to kill them for good. Starting tomorrow I’m declaring full-out war on the little bastards (a.k.a. I’m going to start carrying around a can of ant spray). I want the little bastards out of my house. Now. Any help?

Hello. We have 2 cats and 2 dogs.
We used zodiac spray on all the animals except out newest kitten at first but just tonight we noticed the kitten had tons of adult fleas which we immediately cleaned off and killed the eggs with Dawn soap and then the zodiac spray. She’s completely clean of them now but obviously the problem is not solved. We checked the animals we sprayed and the two dogs had fleas in their genital areas. We wiped them down but the flea eggs are obviously still throughout the home. We are a low income family and have been searching through the internet for ways we can fix this flea problem. We came across many home remedies which we will try but like anyone else we would like professional help. We found a few and Abell seemed to be the best. But; we’re not sure of the price or anything and we are wondering if anyone else has used their services. We’re going to get a free estimate sometime soon (hopefully) but we’re not sure how that will come out.
Does anyone have any other suggestions on top of this?
We’ve read that extermination can cost anymore from 30-200$ for fleas. Does anyone know a cheaper professional place or if Abell will be too much.
We can pay around 100-150$ if we’re lucky, but we don’t expect it to cost that much since we caught it early and we live in a small apartment.

If anyone can help us out it will be greatly appreciated.

Question by Dorothy M: Does anyone have the rules to a dice “mouse” game played with corks on string & a big lid “trap”?
This game was played on the floor with 2 dice, a large mat with a large circle on it and small ones around the inside perimeter, small corks attached to string, a large lid “trap” with handle & pennies. Each person was given the same number of pennier & put their cork “mouse” on a place in the circle drawn on the mat. One player held the lid trap in one hand & threw 2 dice with the other. When certain numbers were rolled, the thrower tried to trap the mice with the lid, while the remaining players tugged their mice to safety. Any mouse caught had to pay a penny. Dice thrower would also try to fake out players, and if they pulled their mouse out on wrong numbers, they had to pay a penny. If dice thrower put the trap down by mistake, he had to pay a penny to everyone who didn’t pull out. When snake eyes (?) were rolled, the dice passed to the next player. Winner was one with most pennies at end of game.

Question by : Has anyone ever used Massey termite services?
I bought a house that had a “termite bond” that the former owners didn’t renew. There are little green cylinders all around the house. The house is a brick, 2500 sq ft single story structure that is shaped pretty much square on the outside perimeter. I want to renew the bond but before they come out I would like to know approximately how much the monthly or yearly fee is (or both?) to continue the coverage. Terminix is advertising an “Ultimate Protection” for $ 34 a month…is Massey comparable? Also, I noticed with Terminix’s “Ultimate Protection” that there is a tiny little disclaimer that states that “drywood termites” are not covered. Why not? Is that unusual? Massey (online) appears to cover ALL termites. Can anyone help with these questions? Thanks.

Answer by duke D
Don’t know those companies but do know the situation. Do not fall for the Orange oil nonsense.
that stuff lasts about 6 months.

Here’s the first few stanzas………….
I know an old lady that swallowed a fly
I don’t know why she swallowed the fly
I guess she’ll die.
I know an old lady that swallowed a spider that wiggled, and wiggled, and jiggled inside her.
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly, but I don’t know why she swallowed the fly
I guess she’ll die.
I know an old lady that swallowed a bird
How absurd to swallow a bird
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider that wiggled, and wiggled, and jiggled inside her
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly, but I don’t know why she swallowed the fly
I guess she’ll die.
I know an old lady that swallowed a cat
Now, fancy that—to swallow a cat
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird, she swallowed the bird to catch the spider that wiggled, and wiggled, and jiggled inside her.
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly
But I don’t know why she swallowed the fly
I guess she’ll die

Later, she swallows a dog, a goat, a hog, and a horse

Question by Doubting Thomas: Can anyone explain a “white elephant” movie vs. a “termite” movie?
The great film critic Manny Farber wrote a famous essay called “White Elephant Art vs. Termite Art” wherein he promoted the latter over the former. He provided a few examples (Laurel and Hardy and John Wayne’s performance in “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance” being in the termite range, Antonioni and Francois Truffaut gravitating toward white elephantism). But it’s difficult to fit his criteria into today’s films.

From Farber’s essay:

“A peculiar fact about termite-tapeworm-fungus-moss art is that it goes always forward eating its own boundaries, and, likely as not, leaves nothing in its path other than the signs of eager, industrious, unkempt activity.

The most inclusive description of the art is that, termite-like, it feels its ways through walls of particularization, with no sign that the artist has any object in mind other than eating away the immediate boundaires of his art, and turning those boundaries into conditions of the next achievement.”

Best answer:

Answer by SUN123
It isnt to simplify but hopefully this helps.

WHITE ELEPHANT: This is film which is more concerned with appearing bigger then life and therefore ends up weakened because of it. Because its trying to be more than it really is, the result is that the film is diminished by the focus of ‘appearance’. Think of when someone says “at this point in time” instead of just saying “now” to sound important. Instead of being genuinely epic, a white elephant film simply attempts to be but actually is all hype and lacks the true merit of a landmark film. It basically takes itself to seriously but is actually just overproduced.

TERMITE: This is a moving film that manages to break new ground. This film would not be trying to force an image but instead allow the contents to speak for itself. In addition, it usually involves “slice of life” storylines in which characters are developed in a way that you genuinely believe them to be true and you find yourself truly involved in their storyline. Ironically, the story often is on a very small scale but because youve been drawn in so strongly, the dilemas and decisions characters face become monumental to the viewer. Personally, I consider this to be the powerful force behind well made independent movies. Its not attempting to amazing, but it is so well crafted that it actually is.

I know this is an overly simplified version of Farber (who provides a imaginitive, descriptive and far better explanation) but I hope it helps.
