I’m a college student living in a rental house with 5 other girls. The house is large, very old and in bad condition. We have always had a problem with bats moving inside the walls. Occasionally they would fly into a room. We would call the landlord but he would either not answer or say there was nothing he could do. Over the last 4 days we have had 3 bats in the house. Once in a bedroom and twice in the living room. Two of the times we were able to get rid of them.
The landlord refuses to call critter control and when we call critter control they say the landlord needs to contact them. We aren’t sure what to do next. Every night we go to bed frightened of bats. We are thinking about calling the health department and the city tomorrow. Would this help? Any other suggestions?
I know we need to seal the cracks but the house is HUGE. Over 3,000 sq ft and three stories plus a basement. While looking at the inside and outside of the house there were tons of cracks and wholes. It would be impossible for us to caulk every one. I never thought about the bat poop. I guess we will have to continue pestering the landlord.

So there is a crack in my wall that I can’t afford to repair right now. Bats come in my house at night and fly around and eventually go back out through the crack. Last night one got in my bedroom and woke me up so I’m going to keep the bedroom door closed now. The bats don’t bother me much except I’m wondering – can I get rabies or parasites, or anything else, from bats that fly around in my house?
I don’t think bats are rodents, but thanks for the answers so far. I’ll try to find a way to cover up that crack.
Laura – I live in a log house. I’ll probably use some tape to cover it up temporarily. I’ll make my hubby do it because I don’t like ladders lol.
