In the house my husband and i are renting, the landlords have padlocked the door to the attic. It is in our hallway between the kitchen and our daughter’s bedroom. When standing outside we can see through upstairs windows and they have mass amounts of stuff stacked all through out. What’s up there isn’t any of our business, but the house was recently struck by lightining and it makes me wonder… if there were to be a fire that developed up there for any reason we would not be able to extunguish the fire. Could this be concidered a fire hazard?
This is just one of several safety concerns I have regarding this house. The chimney looks like it would collapse with little effort from wind (some of the exterior bricks are crumbling). We have a terrible mouse infestation. Regarding that, the complex i live in is shaped as a “u”, two houses on either side connected by a building that is zoned commercial and in previous years used as a business by our landlords. Since the business has shut down the connecting “storefront” is stacked floor to ceiling with junk and garbage, with only pathways to go thru (this building is closed off from us and the other tennants, but I have been back there with the landlord before). Our neighbors (other tennants) are also experiencing an infestation. After talking with the lady who lives there yesterday she told me that she had found a nest of 20 babies in her bathroom. My family had done everything we can to control these mice, including throwing out stuff we dont need that was in our storage room to reduce nesting areas. I have clutter issues anyway so my house isn’t messy in the least, but I still see the little creeps scurrying through my kitchen and living room in the middle of the day.
Also, several outlets in the house approx. half, total) do not work, and above the kitchen light fixtures there are black marks on the ceiling that really concern me…The garbage disposal has never worked and I constantly have to plunge my kitchen sink because it gets clogged. Lights blow within days of putting new bulbs in (we use 60 watt bulbs) and this occurs in EVERY room of the house. The windows are fairly new replacements and looked fantastic when we moved in but then noticed a few weeks later that one in our living room and our daughters bedroom are comming out of their frames.
My husband and I have both contacted the landlord and he says to notify his property manager, and when we do we’re always told that he’s working his “other job” and will get around to checking issues out when he can. We’ve lived here for 12 months and nothing has ever been done to fix a single problem, and there have been several. We are moving at the end of next month to be done with these neglectful jerks, but is there anything we can do to prevent furture tenants from having to endure the same things?
Thanks for your advice in advance!

Okay, first of all, we are NOT dirty people. Sometimes the kitchen is a bit out of hand, but other than that, it’s not like we have food laying around, half-eaten cheeseburgers on the floor or anything. The people that lived here before us had an ant problem, and they were pretty clean individuals in general, so I know that it’s just something that we inherited.

All of our food is in air-tight containers, we have tried poisoning them with those little houses that they are supposed to go into, take the poison, and kill of their nest with. We have tons of those in the closet where they began. Now they are all over the counters, the floor, everywhere. We spray them with soap water and they die, but I don’t want them in here at all. They gross me out and I am constantly itchy, plus, I don’t make much money, and they are eating MY food.

Please, help me kill these bastards. I hate them. I’m about to burn the house down, but I don’t want to move back in with my parents.

PS- They are carpenter ants. Yeah, they’re huge and bulbous and disgusting. My cat has tired of them, and no longer kills them.

A video slide show, produced by Steven L. Smith of King of the House Home Inspection in Bellingham, WA, discusses carpenter ant infestations. Did you know that carpenter ants do not eat wood — they are simply mining wood to build their own residence.

I’m contemplating going into mouse farming – I’ve been given all the perfect equipment for it, just no mice. I’m curious about things such as in the question, but if you know anything else about it you think I should know, feel free to say it.

I’m hoping to develop my own breed, though until I start seeing the traits I want the transitional generations are primarily going to be feeders I imagine – though I’ll certainly sell them as pets to anyone who would want one. I just don’t think there’s that big of a demand.

The white lab mice are cheapest & fairly docile, but I’m contemplating other strains that might be breedable with it in order to “mix it up” genetically to see what traits can be coaxed out of the gene pool. The ideal traits I’m looking to produce are small size, golden/blond fur and as close to “troll hair” on the top of its head as I can get (“troll” referring to those little dolls with the fuzzy hair that were popular in the 80′s – the kind you could buy for the top of your pencil so when you spun it around, it went everywhere. Know the ones I mean?)

The reason I’m hoping to develop this strain is because when my nephew was born, he had what I called “troll hair”, and it’s a family thing sort of – I’d like to have the strain as close to fully developed as possible by the time he graduates high school (he’s in 4th grade now, so I think there may be time).

Any and all advice appreciated! And if you have any more humane method of population control (i.e., getting rid of the excess mice that people don’t want to buy as pets before they’re ready to breed without having to sell them as feeders), I’d also be delighted to entertain the notion.
Re: Population control: I’m aware that I can just separate the ones I don’t want to have breeding and keep them separated by gender. But the population is still likely to build up pretty quickly from even just the few that I -will- select to breed. So I don’t think that is going to be a very practical option. If I sell them to pet stores, they’ll mostly go out as feeders anyway, and quite possibly they will be sold as live food. I’d prefer to sell them as pre-killed feeders if I have to sell them for feeders at all. I could euthanize them much more humanely than Johnny Snake-Owner is likely to. :-#
