Are glue-based mouse traps (i.e. trays) supposed to kill the pest? ?
Posted by: | CommentsI don’t keep a messy house but we have had an unusual rebuilding project here after a hurricane such that a lot of wood has been torn away, making this location in the country more exposed to possible infestation. I have Riddex Pest Control Units in multiple locations, but there has been one particular mouse who is either tone deaf and isn’t driven away by the ultrasonic noise, or my Riddex Units have gone out after one year.
So I bought some poisonless glue traps with supposed “the latest” in pest control technology — “Eugenol” I think it’s called, and it is supposed to anesthesize the rodent in some way. But I’m not sure if it is to the point that the rodent becomes immobile so you can more easily handle the tray. Of just to the point that the pest feels no pain (Hey! I want some of that! Just kidding…)
The directions show a diagram of the user placing the tray in a trash can, but it doesn’t show the part where the rodent is stuck to the tray (I guess that would be distasteful?). And if the pest isn’t dead, I’m not so sure I would want to put it in a trash can where it might become dislodged and find more stuff to feast upon. So this begs the question — “Is the user supposed to kill the rodent themselves?”
I had hamsters as a kid so the thought of bashing the little suckers doesn’t thrill me. I guess I should go with the old fashioned spring-loaded traps that do the extermination on their own, yes?
If you’ve had experience with glue-based traps, please share your knowledge as I am curious what is really expected of the user. I’m not going to drive the live mouse to a mile or more away from my home to dispose of it and I don’t have a boa constrictor to feed it to. And yes, I’ll call the exterminator if the pest problem worsens. I’ve gone for a quick fix with an inexpensive tray trap right now, but after the tray caught my mouse last night and I waited for the Eugenol to work it’s magic, I woke to find the mouse had gotten away.
