Only this time I can show the actual process without it being an x rated show : ) This little guy latched onto my lower leg (just below the calf muscle). It was an awkward angle to get the tick, but I did end up getting it out. This was after a long day and I was heading to bed. You can tell I’m a bit tired in the vid.
This is a video of us removing a paralysis tick from our dog bella. This video shows the tick removal, the pit it leaves behind and what a paralysis tick looks like. Bella also has “cherry eye”. This is an unrelated issue where the eyelid bulges out and does not retract causing a red bulge in the corner of the eye. We have treated this by massaging it back in etc. but to no avail. Eventually we will have it surgically removed. At least look good while pulling your dog or cats tick out, with a choker from www.titaniumtwisters.com

Question by stormwarnfm: New puppy, maybe blue tick or catahoula, have questions, can you help?
We have a new puppy. We now assume he was dumped (no one responded to our “found” ads or called in any missing puppy at our pound) at our home. He is about 6-8 weeks old by looking at him.

I will be taking him to the vet on payday to get puppy shots, so I will know more for sure, hopefully, what breed he is…but looking at pictures online…he looks like either a blue tick hound or a catahoula hound.

He has a brindle face and a black dot on his back that is perfectly round…his tail is already docked (which is why we placed found ads, first), and his fur is mostly white with this undertone of brown . His front legs are kind of spotty or “ticked”.

We have a Miniature Schnauzer and 6 cats, and all are getting along with him great, thank goodness!

My questions are:

If he is blue tick or catahoula, what is their temperament? I know those breeds are bred to hunt, but we have a Miniature Schnauzer, so we know all about what to do, such as keeping in a fenced yard and always on a leash when walking so they don’t run after a leaf, etc…haha

How big does a dog like that get? He will be an inside dog, but be allowed plenty of walks and playtime with my 2 kids. Probably a good 3 or 4 hours of good activity a day, and we are starting to kennel train him, which he seems to be liking.

How trainable are they? The little guy seems pretty smart…he is taking to his kennel, as I mentioned, as well as learning commands like “come”, “inside”, and “outside” and the word “kennel”.

Finally, what else would I need to know about this breed to make sure that we know what to have or do to cater to his needs?
Good idea on the microchip…surely a vet would check that out for free before my payday comes next week.

That’s what made us suspect, too, the docked tail…when we found him…the dock was dirty…it wasn’t fresh…but looked like he had a little bit of scab left.

My only thoughts are either: he is a lost puppy, OR, someone thought they could handle a puppy and couldn’t…as almost all puppies are chewers, etc…and if you’re not prepared or dedicated to changing those behaviors, it won’t happen.

Thanks for that idea, and thanks to the other poster for that link on Cattle dogs…he’s not that “ticked” but he sure could have that build.
***EDIT*** HERE’S a picture of Chance.

http://www.geocities.com/stormwarnfm/chance.jpg

One last thing…the brown ticking is really light on his hind legs…and darker on his front legs…this picture is a week old and his legs are darker now.

Best answer:

Answer by kristendw78
It sounds to me like you might have an Australian Cattle Dog pup there. The site has some info about them http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/australiancattledog.htm and I found a picture of one with a spot on it’s back like your pup http://www.haustiere-info.de/images/tiere/australian-cattle-dog.jpg
and here’s the AKC site http://www.akc.org/breeds/australian_cattle_dog/

Edit: Hmmm. Now that you’ve posted a picture of him, I’d say he looks sort of like a Jack Russell terrier. The vet might be able to give you a better idea about his breeds(s). Strange that no one has claimed him. Have you tried posting ads online? I know www.petfinder.com has a lost and found section, plus there are many others you can try. It just seems odd that someone had the pups tail docked, and isn’t looking for it. Plus if he did escape, he couldn’t have traveled too far being so young.

Question by babygurl: Found tick on my dog, never had one before and im not sure if its even a tick?
I was watching TV and my chihuahua was sitting across from me on the couch. I saw something black crawling on his head. At first I thought it was just a fly or mosquito. As i got closer, I noticed it looked more like a spider. The first thing that came to mind is “#$ (@ A TICK?!” Well I went to the bathroom and got a piece of toilet paper to get rid of whatever it was. I tried smothering it (yeah I know it sounds cruel but I didn’t want that thing to bite me) but it wouldn’t die! It was slowly trying to escape the toilet paper when I decided to just flush it down the toilet. We just to be safe I took my dogs collar off and began checking to see if that bug had a family it decided to leave behind. I noticed around his neck he had a red little scare but I’m thinking it could be from the collar just irritating it. I have no experience with fleas, ticks or anything in that matter because my dogs are 98% of the time inside. The only time they go outside is when they need to go to the bathroom. I live in Miami, FL and the weather lately has been extremely humid as well as rainy. None of my dogs have ever had a tick before and I just wanted to know what precautions I should take. I bath the chihuahua with flea and tick shampoo so I’m not really sure how this happened. I just wanted to know if I should be worried or if I’m just over reacting. I know this post is kinda long but I just wanted to give as much detail as possible because I wasn’t sure if that bug was a tick or if it was some sort of spider (I don’t think it was a spider because the only native spiders in Miami are usually daddy long legs and other ones that usually have red accents in it and this one did not). Thanks so much for your help.

Answer by Valerie
if it looked like one of these: http://www.idph.state.il.us/images/CDC_TickSizeComparison.jpg
then it was a tick

but if it looked like one of these: http://killingdogfleas.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/flea_close_up.jpg
it was a flea

if the picture doesn’t work, you can google image “gray tick”
Isn’t there a way to remove it at home?

Best answer:

Answer by Libertarian and proud of it
Go to the vet. Removing ticks are hard. You can accidentally rip off the body, but leave the head in. Then, disease can spread, since it will be harder to remove it.

Question by Yea Y: Tick possibly embedded in dog?
I think my dog was bitten by a tick and it fell off on its own, or the tick is still inside. there is a “tick size lump” under his skin and a little bit of brownish/black scab/or tick” showing. We lit a match and blew it out and put it on the scab/tick. nothing happened. I’m not sure if this is a infection the tick left or if its still possibly the tick inside of him.

Could it possibly be the tick? Is it infected? Etc….
Im just touching the scab or tick with the match, he felt no pain. Or at least showed no pain when I did it. I wouldnt hurt him .

Answer by Thumbs^Queen
Call the vet. It may not be necessary to take him him, but advice is free and easy to obtain.
