What Can Help Reduce My Dog’s Allergies?

My black labrador (6 years old) has atopic dermatitis (allergies) to rye grass, clover and house dust mites.
We have tried to solve this by using antihistamines, steroids, ‘sensetizing’ treatment, homoepathy (using sulphur), introducing fatty oils and primrose oil to his food, changing his diet (he currently has a wheat and preservative free diet), using different shampoos, and wiping him with Byotrol pet wipes.
We do not want to use immunosupressant drugs.
Does anyone know of anything else we can try?

i have the same problem with my pup and see it on a daily basis in work!
ill list what we do and see if any of that helps…
*store food in airtight container to stop dust settling,
*dampen food down and wipe face after eating
    * use a hypoallergenic food
*stay on top of other parasites to let skin build up its defences against dust mights – use advocate as its stronger
    * use indorex in the house – as its the only house spray affective against dustmites
    * Use vetbed for bedding and wash everyother day as dustmites love fleece etc
    * consider kenneling outside as the air circulates better not allowing dust mites to settle.
    * use benedryl cream after walks to stop pollen etc causing problems
    * coatex is the best shampoo to use as it contains oatmeal which is soothing – use this twice a week
    * keep up with the evening primrose oil as it will keep her skin healthy
    hope this helps!!

hi.my dog is also allergic to dustmites and has been to a dermatologist who suggest we use a hoover which has a hepa filter. the filter will remove the dustmites from your carpet. this helped my dog a lot. also there is a spray availble from vets to kill dust mites on things such as beds and couches. also a very valuble product in my household. i have found that feeding her oily fish such as tuna and sardine two or three times a week also helps as it promotes a healthy coat and skin. hope this helps. my dog drives me crazy itching all the time.

Have you been to a specialist? There are dermatologists for animals just like for people. If you haven’t, ask your regular vet for a referral to one your area. You mentioned sensitizing treatments, have you had it allergy tested? You can do blood tests or you can have skin testing done like they do with people. This is usually done by the specialist. That would give you a better idea of what to avoid or eliminate from your dogs environment. If you have done all this, then I say steroids maybe the only way to keep your dog comfortable. Most vets try to get it down to lowest dose that keeps your dog comfortable. I wish I could offer you more advice.Good Luck.

Unfortunately there is no cure for allergies. Have you done serum? I assume you have been to an animal dermatologist to find out exactly what the allergies are.
